My Internship at Finlay James

Like most people, I strangely stumbled into the realm of recruitment through meddling parents and the wonders of social media. I’d never really considered a career in recruitment until now...

I like to talk, I like people (some days) and most of all I like to help – I think those are three of the main components/features of recruitment.

After my stumble into recruitment, I went through a couple phone interviews and then a face-to-face interview. It’s safe to say it was a success, I got the internship. I had finally made it through to the interview process and became a part of the fabulous FJ team in Birmingham!

Thus my journey into recruitment began, I sat through numerous Social Talent videos regarding the scintillating structures of search strings. My mentor, Pritesh Patel, guided me through the ins and outs of cold calling and helped me to create scripts in case I needed help remembering the correct questions to ask different candidates. I’ll admit I was a bit shy at first because I was nervous, however the Birmingham team were always around to help with nerves and any questions. The entire Birmingham team were so helpful, I bugged them with questions all the time and they never hesitated to help me.

As my mentor, Pritesh played a huge role in helping me settle into my role as an intern, not only did he provide chocolate but he was always willing to listen if I had a problem. Anthony Ingman taught me how to be a whizz-kid with search strings and how to utilise search boards. Amelia Chapman introduced me to marketing roles and how to handpick candidates for specific companies and Ruth Farrar always offered very refreshing and uplifting advice which motivated me throughout the day. The entire team welcomed me with open arms and took the time out of their busy days to teach me new things and help me learn from my mistakes rather than criticising me.

As time went on I became more confident on the phone, I picked up tricky techy terms and I actually understood what I was talking about. I was no longer faking it ‘til I made it – I had officially made it! I finally understood the art of finding a great candidate and headhunting the crème de la crème of the working world. I tried my utmost to hit my KPIs every week and make as many calls as possible each day. My favourite part of the internship was working on international searches, I really enjoyed talking to people from different countries, from different cultures and challenging the time differences we’re all exposed to.

I was also lucky enough to be invited to the FJ Summer party, I was placed in a 4 star hotel for one night and given free drinks at a top notch terrace roof top bar. I finally got to meet the rest of the FJ team and everyone had individual pearls of wisdom to offer about learning new skills and perseverance in recruitment.

Now I bet you’re wondering, what did I learn from this internship?

Let’s just say, my emotional intelligence is thriving at the moment! FJ taught me how to engage with people (candidates) and understand their situation. They also made realise me the importance of social media; I never really thought about using social media as a tool for job hunting. Now, I’d go as far as to say that social media as a platform is THE most effective tool for the work place in the 21st century. I am a more confident and well-rounded person, not only am I more confident in social situations but in any professional environment I’ve learnt to fake it until I make it. I’ve also become a budding star in the networking arena because of the skills and knowledge taught by FJ.

My internship at FJ has taught me a lot about working life and about myself, my strengths and weaknesses and how there is always room for improvement. I’d like to thank FJ for this opportunity, especially John Gaughan for creating this internship as it provides students like me with the opportunity to break into a golden industry and the Birmingham office for showing me first hand that perseverance and tenacity in the work place go a very long way.

The FJ summer internship has made me realise that work can be fun and it’s as simple as that. You should always enjoy what you do and the culture of the company impacts work ethic immensely. FJ has an amazing work culture and I was very lucky to experience it first hand during my internship. I am very grateful for the chance to work for such a fun-loving company who offer an ever-changing enthralling golden opportunity.
